CARROLL COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUM

Hwy. 30 & Court St., Carroll
The museum is housed in a former Carnegie Library building. Material consists of articles from the late 1700's to present, with numerous photos on display. Winter Hours - 1pm - 4pm, Tuesday - Friday.  Summer Hours - 10am - 4pm, Tuesday - Friday.  First Sunday of every month 1pm - 4pm.  Tours are welcome and should be scheduled in advance.  (712) 792-9548 or 1582


WAR MEMORIAL MONUMENTS

East First Street South of Grant Road, Carroll
The War Memorial Monuments in Carroll's Cemetery are a memorial to all soldiers. There is a monument for each war beginning with the Civil War and the latest monument for Desert Storm. It is one of the few monuments for Desert Storm in the state of Iowa.


                    

SWAN LAKE STATE PARK                                             
Two miles south and 1/2 mile east of Carroll 510-acre multi-use facility includes:                
 biking and walking trail, cross country skiing, enclosed fishing house,   
camping, fishing, swimming, concessions, boat & bike rentals,
mini nature center, wildlife exhibits and a petting zoo.

FARMSTEAD MUSEUM

Swan Lake State Park.  Two miles south and one mile east of Carroll.  The museum contains a collection of farm buildings, horse drawn machinery and tools of the farm past. (712) 792-4614


ONE ROOM SCHOOL HOUSE AND LOG CABIN

Graham Park, Grant Road between 7th and 11th St., Carroll
An authentic one room schoolhouse from the 1880's and log cabin from the 1850's moved into the park for viewing. Tours available.

A 7 D CORSAIR FIGHTER

Arthur N. Neu Airport, four miles east, one mile south of Carroll.  The A 7 D Corsair Fighter was one of the main fighters used in the Vietnam War.  This plane was donated by the Iowa National Guard and dedicated to the Carroll County men and women who served or died in the Vietnam War.  The plane was built for land and aircraft carrier use with maximum speed of 698 mph.


SAUK RAIL TRAIL

The 33 mile trail runs from Swan Lake State Park, Carroll, to Black Hawk State Park, Lake View.  The Swan Lake to Maple River section (13 miles) is blacktop;  Maple River to Carnarvon (13 miles) is limestone.  Carnarvon to Lake View (7 miles) is concrete.  A $10.00 per year User Fee or $1.00 per day is needed for users 18 and older.  For more information call (712) 792-4614.

RIVERSIDE PARK

Northeast corner of Coon Rapids.
144-acre park with blacktop hiking-biking path (2 1/2 miles) adjacent to Middle Raccoon River. A variety of wildlife species can be seen. In 1993 a 100 ft. cable suspension bridge was built in the park over the Middle Raccoon River. (712) 792-4614


GRAVE AND MEMORIAL OF MERLE D. HAY

Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery, 1/2 mile west of Glidden, Iowa
The memorial is an open roadside memorial on Hwy. 30. This historical site is a memorial to Merle Hay, who was one of the first U.S. soldiers, and the first Iowan, killed in World War I. Merle Hay is buried at the Merle Hay Memorial cemetery.


DICKSON TIMBER

Two miles east and four and one-half miles north of Glidden.
155 acre wooded area with hiking trails, registered primitive and electrical hook-up camping, enclosed stone shelter on site.  (712) 792-4614


MISSOURI-MISSISSIPPI DRAINAGE DIVIDE

Hwy. 30, one mile east of Arcadia, Iowa
Roadside attraction.  From this point east all water runs east to the Mississippi River and from this point west all water runs west to the Missouri River. Elevation 1,429 feet.


PHEASANT HUNTING

Hunting season is October 25, 2003 - January 10, 2004. Carroll County enjoys one of the highest pheasant harvests in the state of Iowa.

LINCOLN HIGHWAY MILE MARKERS

As you drive through Carroll County, there are several spots with the original Lincoln Highway Mile Markers. Locations are: Carroll County Historical Museum, Ralston, and a farm east of Glidden. Lincoln Highway route through Carroll is marked with LH street markers.

HOLIDAY ANIMATED LIGHTING EXTRAVAGANZA

Swan Lake State Park
Christmas festivities take on a new splendor as lights and animation unite. Sightseers will be enthralled with a campground full of lighted scenes, all of which can be viewed from the winter comfort of their own vehicles.


CARROLL BASEBALL STADIUM ( MERCHANT'S PARK)

The historic 1949 Carroll Baseball Stadium built initially for Carroll's semi-pro team (Merchants) is a unique site for some of the finest high school and college baseball in Iowa.  In addition to regular season games for both high schools, many tournaments are played on one of the state's finest fields.  Plans are progressing for a full restoration of this wonderful, fan-friendly ball park.  Visitors are always welcome.  For more information, call Parks & Recreation Dept. GERMAN HAUSBARN/HERITAGE PARK

Hwy. 141 1/2 mile east of Manning
Travel through time to experience Manning's authentic German Hausbarn, built in 1660 in Schleswig-Holstein Germany and reconstructed in 1999.  View museum-quality architecture and displays of the thatched-roof barn where farm animals shared living quarters with the family. Also experience the 1915 era Leet-hassler Farmstead, restored to its original state with all the furnishings of the period.  The Hausbarn, farm, barns and outbuildings are a must to see!  Hausbarn Restaurant and Konferenz Center will open at the site in Spring 2003.  Open Monday - Saturday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday 1:00 to 5:00 pm.  Season opens as early in the spring as weather allows.  Call (800) 292-0252 or (712)655-3131 for information.


CHICAGO & NORTHWESTERN RAILROAD DEPOT & PARK

The unique 1896 Chicago & Northwestern Railroad depot and American Express building designed by Charles Sumner Frost in his classic, Victorian Romanesque style is being totally restored.  The depot building and adjacent, historic railroad park will soon return to its place as a community green space and meeting area.  For more information call Barry Bruner at (712) 792-3480.


 

FARMERS MARKET

BREDA MEMORIAL PARK (BASEBALL STADIUM)

 

The wonderful former home stadium of the Breda Eagles, semi-pro team of the 1940s and the 1975 St. Bernard High School State Baseball Champions features one of the few remaining wooden covered grandstands in the Midwest. Built in 1947 (totally restored in 2001) for $15,000, it was described as "one of the best baseball parks in the state" with grandstand seating 600 and "lighting facilities equal to any in Iowa". SAVING OUR AVIAN RESOURCES

Come and visit SOAR, a wildlife rehabilitation and education facility in Carroll County.  Most of SOAR's patients are raptors, hawks, owls, eagles, and falcons.  Walk through the new facilities with displays and areas to view the raptors as they mend and regain strength for release.  Get up close to the resident education birds, including Spirit the bald eagle.  Tours by appointment. CNWRR DEPOT

Breda, Iowa
The Chicago Northwestern Railroad Depot was built in 1905 to replace the one that was destroyed by fire. The building has been restored to its original condition and has been furnished with some of the original furnishings along with memorabilia of the CNWRR. For tours call (712) 673-2660
